RE: What tools did you decide to carry?

IMHO along with the tools should be a serpentine belt for your MH. Bought an extra one before I left.....it's in the overhead cabinet just in case! RV'ers shouldn't leave home without one.:B

RE: Watch carefully which CG you stay at in Tennessee

Don't blame you for leaving but it DOES bring up an interesting question. Just what is the difference between "homeless tent campers" and someone who is "full timing" in ANY RV? Besides the amount of money spent on the vehicle that is. I didn't want this to turn into, let's pull out the "full-timing card". I guess it's liken to how do you tell the difference between someone walking thru the park and stopping to sit on the park bench......from someone who is 'living' in the park and the park bench? You can tell the difference. And BTW: the first tent camper told me they were just thrown out of the homeless camp and they were ticked that TN lets the homeless sleep on the streets but that the homeless can't sleep in the woods.:B Not a homeless thread just an FYI to recreational tent campers who are going to run into the new 2 day limit in this area and RV'ers who don't want to be caught in the middle of it as I was in TN from the recent action of the sheriffs office.:C

Watch carefully which CG you stay at in Tennessee

Apparently Tennessee Sheriff's went in and raided homeless tent campers set up in groups in various parts of the woods. So they are now making their way into the CG's in the area. I was staying at a CG outside Nashville waiting for MH repairs. Second night they parked a tent camper next to me. Did find it odd they they would place them there next to the pull throughs. No problem for me....only they were homeless tent campers. Next night another set of homeless tent campers were set up. That night the guns and knives came out and I started packing up and even though I was paid up for the next 2 nights I just pulled out.! CG's can't discriminate so they now limit the tent campers to only 2 days stay at CG's to try and discourage the influx of homeless people. I noticed the state parks had changed some of their rules too to keep them from going there. Sadly I'm sure this is going to impact the recreational tent campers in this area that would want to stay longer than 2 days.:(

RE: Anyone have experience replacing emergency brake assembly?

First of all what I have found out in the past 6 days just TRYING to find someone to just work on it IS..... Ford Dealership won't work on MH's, Semi Truck Service Depts. - used to work on them but it seems after a coach builder gets the chassis they DO change parts out and your Ford MH may not have 100% Ford parts on it. 2 -repair shops said they were SURE it was the torque converter. 4 -repair shops were sure it was that my V10 just couldn't handle towing a 2,000 lb toad. 1 -repair shop replaced a vacumm module that regulated fuel on demand AND checked all the brakes and found them to be ok? 0 -NOT one RV dealership in three states would even look at. I finally found a shop thru referral from a small shop in Smyrna TN. (The one and only funny thing about this is when you call dealerships and repair shops when asked if you are a light truck or heavy truck you say heavy truck......here I said heavy truck and was transferred to the heavy truck division, said it was E450 and they laughed and said you want the light truck division.):B MID-TENN FORD TRUCK Nashville, TN GREAT repair shop. They work ONLY on big trucks. Fast, efficient, and I was treated with great respect and they understood I was on the road full time and they made arrangements to work on it asap. AND they are open and work until 1:00 a.m, and 'welcome' MH's. They found the parking brake leaking and found one rear caliper hung up, all in 10 minutes. Funny none of the others found the leak or caliper problem.:H And YUP my MH has the driveshaft parking brake, and it is all one assembly. Emergency Brake assembly holds about 1 1/2 quarts of the fluid so if you loose that, nightly night. So the drive shaft was half frozen along with the left rear brake. Poor old V10 still tried to push her up those hills towing, all the time being held back by the rear axles. Who'd a thought the emergency brake was part of the trans and stops the whole axle?!! Bottom line $2,613.60 and I am back on the road. BIG BIG shout out to Mid-Tenn Ford Truck Repair, Nashville, TN. If you ever need MH work when in TN, head out to them.:C

RE: Anyone have experience replacing emergency brake assembly?

.....I dont know how far it is to the Ford truck repair shop, but you should consider a tow truck, your breaks may not work well enough for the trip. Right now there is drag and it becomes worse when they get heated up. Stopped at that point to find local shop. Stayed there 2 days to try and find a shop with no luck. Found a heavy truck 'only' Ford dealership in Nashville. Drove the distance towards there and staying in a KOA overnight to cool down. And then early morning heading out to the truck dealership which is 10 miles. Thanks for all the info. Always good to know as much as you can BEFORE walking into these repair shops. Definitely a much different experience when on the road full time and the mechanic you trust is waaay back home and no one either doesn't want to work on a MH or is not equipped to work on one.: I'll surely post all what is found today so as to help another RV'er who might have the same problem. Sounds like the bill is going to have a comma in the price.:R

RE: Anyone have experience replacing emergency brake assembly?

If that Four Winds of yours in on a Ford E-450 as I suspect, the parking brake in mounted on the back end of the transmission, and its an hydraulic unit activated by pulling on a cable, locking the drive shaft. They are adjustable if there just not holding. But I understand there's not much you can do with them if they have a leak except replace them. And there not cheap, so hope it can be adjusted, its vary easy, I did my own in 10 min. There is no Emergency break, it has 4 wheel anti lock, disk breaks with hydraulic over hydraulic boost system, not vacuum. And your problem is not in the parking brake system. You could have a problem with the hydro-Boost system, or the master cylinder/anti lock break or one wheel caliper. If both rear wheels rotors are damaged, you have a major problem involving the system mentioned above, and the damaged it caused to the rear rotors and calipers of both rear wheels. Thank you very much! that explains further what they tried to tell me. They found the rear rotors to be damaged and they suspect the calipers to be damaged also. They strongly suggested not to turn them but to replace them and the piston. Albeit they conveyed that the emergency brake is 'separate' your description shows it is not. I have 'never' liked any of the bleeding of the brakes I have had done after I installed new brakes. Every shop that I had the bleeding redone at presented a different feel of braking which I never was comfortable with. Thanks for your response. Going to limp her down to major heavy truck Ford dealership in Tennessee. Have to head out today to beat rush hour which really heats the brakes up and the road closings that lead to the dealership because of the pres debate being held there.:R

RE: Brakes seizing

All I can add to your post is today I found out that it was my emergency brakes that have been draggin NOT the MH brakes. Same thing, everyone kept checking the front brakes and the backs and none of them saw that it was the rotor and calipers from the emergency brake that was allowing the damaged piston to inch out after it got hot from driving.:R When cold you didn't notice it, but boy you sure would after you had been driving for awhile. No smell of fire just the MH bogging down.

RE: My Winter Camping Plan

Feel free to critique, add anything I forgot, or better methods as I've never winter camped before! Am I missing something? Yup! One of these; http://www.thetford.com/Portals/0/images/product_pp345.jpg I used mine when I went from the upper midwest to florida during the cold months with MH winterized and stayed at the CG's along the way down that where open but with water shut off during off season. Dump was always open though at these. They are real slick! It's identical to the one in your RV. And the bottom detaches like a suitcase no smell no nothing and you can take it into a gas station or dump station at the CG. An arm pulls out and you don't see or smell anything when it dumps either! Mine fit right next to the toilet in my MH. Sorry I can't share your enthusiasm about THIS picture:W..... I just sold my home and am heading south so 'my' MH, will NEVER EVER have to sit under 4 feet of snow EVER again.:C http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo64/carpen7/DSCF0035.jpg height=512 width=384 Good grief! It gives me the shivers just looking at it!:B Good luck and have fun on your winter trip!

Anyone have experience replacing emergency brake assembly?

Apparently the emergency brake was left on while it was driven at last place I had repairs done when they took it for a test drive. I KNOW I have never driven it with the emeregency brake on did some damage to the calipers/rotor and it didn't show signs until I hit the road and did some long term driving when it started getting hot and slowing the MH down. That all said and done with, it happened, and now I need some advice! I am now in a small podunk town and all that is available is small repair shops and I am not sure how well versed they are with this type of repair and it seems they aren't either!:B The repair shop where I am at think that both axles have to be removed to repair this. The first over inspection said they saw blue steel and the caliper is red showing it was exposed to extreme heat conditions and the bars are egg shaped. They figure the hotter it got that the damaged piston was most likely inching out causing the friction. Symptoms where inability to get up the hills after it got warm and the clencher was when I let it freewheel down the hills being pushed by a toad and it almost came to a stop.:R I guess my question is, is taking off both rear axles the 'only' way to replace the emergency brake assembly?

RE: Brighter interior light bulbs???

Do you have a new RV or used RV? If it is not new, change ALL the bulbs in the RV and ALL the plastic covers. 1. The plastic lens although to the eye don't look it but they yellow from the blub heat and age.And some older RV's have a more dense plastic then the new clear replacement ones do which lets out more light. 2. The bulbs sometimes will have a gray coating on them from age and voltage changes. (heck after just one year with the new one I changed all the bulbs and had a brighter RV) My first RV I changed all the covers and bulbs and my RV was 10 times brighter inside!!:B:B All for a couple of bucks.:W 1141 upgrade to 1156. They put out more light but also get hotter and can melt the lenses. Can? They always melt the lenses!:B:B

RE: Plastic water taste

Just bought a new fifth wheel trailer, but this is really general to any new unit. My tank fresh water tastes like plastic. City water hookup does not. I have sanitized with bleach and have run three 45 gallon tanks of fresh water through the pump, along with filling and draining two more, but it still tastes like crap. Anyone else had this issue? How did you rectify the funky taste?Help! I bought this stuff from Camco when I bought my RV and again when I got some pretty nasty well water. It works so good that I try and make sure I use it at least once a year. Great Product no taste or smell either when you're done. http://www.jcwhitney.com/wcsstore/jcwhitney/images/imagecache/G_23832G_SW_1.jpg Most RV stores have it. Jc Whitney always carries it. Surprisingly with quite a few other RV products. RE: Help! How can I install computer permanently in MH?

rockhillmanor - the secret is as others have said wireless everything. The only thing that needs to be plugged in is the monitor. Everything else you can use blue tooth or wireless. Eliminates much of the wire issue and makes it much easier to put things in a permanent spot and not have to spend an hour putting it away. I'm still reeling from the comments from all of you that I can put a 'printer back in the bedroom'! First thing on my list for tomorrow is to head out and buy a wireless printer. My little HP all-in-one that prints, copies, and scans is really nice and it ain't broke, but if I can buy one that I can delegate to the back of the bus I'm there.:B

RE: No room at the Inn!

i went thru a state park in Leesburg, Fl to use their dump. It was real nice and very empty in prime season. I saw a lot of CG, resorts that were not filled up and there are PLENTY of them down there.

RE: Reliving some stress

For the past couple weeks I've been reading thread after thread of all this countries problems, and have even added my opinion from time to time.So to help my get over all of this I'm going camping this weekend and next weekend.I better spend my dollars before they are used to pay more taxes.:D Don't go Tennessee camping to de-compress! I just landed here and went to load up on groceries for the stay at an RV resort and you know pretty much what you buy all the time and what it will usually cost......well I got to the register and WOW their sales tax is almost 10%! AND Where I am originally from you don't pay taxes on any thing you eat or need to live, nada, period, none! What a shocker for me. And I came down here to look at property to buy.:R I think I'll mosey my way further south to another state before looking at real estate.

RE: Do you keep the LPG switched on?

I'm curios as to how many keep the LPG switched on when no appliances are in use? I currently got the LPG on for the pilot lights on the stove/oven, but I was wondering if it would be smarter to switch the LPG off at the tank and relight them every evening. Not sure if you are parked permanently or not. I leave my propane on all the time. (cept for filling tank of course) The Fridge switches to propane when I unhook from shore power to travel. So I leave it on so when I pull out the fridge can auto switch to propane and I have cold food when I get to my next destination.:W I don't use the stove at all so I have no need for the propane when parked, but I just know that if I shut it off while parked I will sure as heck forget to turn it on for traveling when the fridge switches over to it.

RE: Correct English

In many areas of Appalachia, particularly east Tennessee, if you wanted a soda or pop you to ask for a dope. If you requestcoke you automatically got peanuts in it. I know, we're a bunch of hicks! I guess you're never too old to learn.:C I learned a new word the first time I went to Florida. At a dinner party they ended dinner with an invitation for cocktails and to meet them in the 'Lanai'. I had to sheepishly ask the maid 'what' a Lanai was and where would it be?!:B

RE: How do you train a dog about Traffic?

A good obedience class would remedy that. And please do not resort to electrically shocking your dog for something he was never 'taught' not to do.:R So, if you don't have a good solid obedience training in your dog and he is in danger of being hurt or god forbid the drivers swerve and hit someone, here is tip how to stop it right now. Find a safe parking lot or empty street. One car One friend One squirt bottle filled with 'water'.Super shooters are even better. You dog and you.......... Set the situation up. And not just walking up to you friends car. Have your friend be down the street or parking lot out of view and THEN take your dog for a walk. Dogs aren't stupid you need to make the set up situation impersonnal just as if it were a strange car passing by. Have your friend 'drive by you' and if and only if your dog lunges at the car they squirt him with the water bottle and it is important that they 'continue' to drive on. In 20 years I have yet to have a 'car lunging/chasing dog' take more than 2 drive-by's to decide it wasn't any fun chasing cars that net a face bath!:B And no it will not ruin him of wanting to go for a fun ride with you in the car.....because to him it was a 'strange person' in the bad water gun car!:B:W

RE: Correct English

Press "1" for English!!! What would John Wayne have said? I don't think we really have to worry about this until it becomes, "Press 9 for English" ! Ohhhh, were almost there! When I called one of my utilities and it said to press 2 for English instead of making the 'other' guys select a language I almost lost it! AND I didn't live within 200 miles of anyone that didn't speak English. And do NOT ever ask a kid sitting at your dinner table up in the Catskills if he wants a 'pop' they start crying immediately! Apparently those people don't use the word pop for soda. After trying to fight off the father who flew over the table to his son's defense we got down to the fact that I was just offering him something to drink.......the darn kid thought I was going to 'pop' him.:R:B
